Early Export

Once Almond Roca® Buttercrunch was sealed in the distinctive pink tin, its shelf life was extended, making the product ready for export.

The first international sale was to Canada in 1929, and then to the Philippines in 1931. Exports expanded further once U.S. troops introduced Almond Roca® tins to a variety of countries during World War ll, the Korean War, and Vietnam.

  • Japan

One of Brown & Haley’s oldest international partnership goes back to 1962 when Meidi-Ya Corporation imported Almond Roca® tins for sale in their flagship imported foods store on the Ginza, and other high-end locations in Japan.

Since 2014, we have been represented in Japan by Hawaiian Host Japan.

  • Greater China

In the late 1960’s, the import arm of a supermarket chain in Hong Kong began marketing Almond Roca® as a premium Chinese New Year’s gift. The partnership has endured through three generations, the hand-over of Hong Kong, and the Reform and Opening of China.

Over the past 10 years, 62% has been sold to “Greater China” (Hong Kong, China mainland, China travel retail). Hong Kong has been the biggest driver for all of Brown & Haley’s® international sales for over 50 years.

Chinese New Year

is Brown & Haley’s® second largest selling season.

The Lunar New Year typically falls between mid-January and mid-February. It is a time of family togetherness and gift-giving. The gold foil and red color in the Almond Roca® packaging make it a most respected gift.

  • Global Brand

Since the 1970’s, exporting Almond Roca® has been a major focus for Brown & Haley. Today, the company has direct sales to over 35 countries.

Due to widespread distribution, Roca® Buttercrunch can be found in over 65 countries.

  • Our Global Markets

With a growth rate averaging 15% per year, international sales represent more than 40% of the revenue for the Roca® brand. Greater China, Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, Australia, Canada, and Mexico are the largest markets. Smaller markets cover the world from Chile to South Africa, and England to Adu Dhabi.

  • Why We Export

The company’s competitive advantages make Brown & Haley a great exporter! Being a long way from Chicago and New York means it is harder to serve those markets. Conversely, it is easier and lower cost to service Asian markets, given the company’s location near the Port of Tacoma; it costs less to ship Almond Roca® candy to Shanghai than Chicago. Company salespeople study consumer behaviors in priority countries and travel overseas several times per year to ensure continued growth.
